This doesn't work anymore for a simple reason
Social Media Echo Chambers. It used to be that crazy people would be deemed...crazy. Now, they are emboldened by audiences online and continue to make crazier and crazier statements. The reason Barstool Sports and Joe Rogen are so popular (trying to stay apolitical here) are because their fanbases create echo chambers of chest beating about whatever their idols are saying. They start to grow and grow and before you know it, they are a force in the industry. Seriously, go try and bad mouth either of those things on social media. You will have to delete your account or mute notifications for 4 months to stop the barrage of nuts who will defend those people to their dying day.
Look at the accusations against Dave Portnoy. Personally, I think Barstool is the Washington Commanders of the Sports Industry and it's a very believable story that DP would be a terrible dude. For every one comment like what I just typed, you will get 50 dudes typing "Dave's got the receipts. Get outta here, he's awesome! You're just jealous and you suck!" There's a cultish attitude that has been able to grow because people just left Barstool alone, thinking the crazies will go way on their own. They aren't and that cultish attitude has invaded politics as well.
As Vippie pointed out, this attitude *on both sides* has all but eliminated the moderate voice. You know, the sensible one that usually debates the merits of both sides of an issue before declaring their intentions on anything.
